In Wine, 'Unoaked' Doesn't Mean 'Less Flavor'

PASO ROBLES, Calif., May 7 (GrapeVineTrail) -- First it was American oak barrels instead of French, then oak chips and in-tank oak planks instead of barrels at all.

Bouchon Chardonnay 2004

Bouchon

Bouchon Chardonnay 2004

tasting Notes: Chardonnay is the chameleon of white winegrapes: it can produce a light, crisp wine, or the fullest of whites. The Bouchon Chardonnay lies near the latter end of the spectrum; oak-aging and Burgundian winemaking techniques give the wine rich butterscotch and vanilla aromas, while the palate comes through with the tropical fruit flavors that California?s warm climate provides.

Andretti Selections 2004 Chardonnay Central Coast California

Andretti

Andretti Selections 2004 Chardonnay Central Coast California

tasting Notes: Mario Andretti's Italian roots come out in this food-friendly take on California Chardonnay. An appreciation for good wine sparked the former race-car champion's interest in owning a winery about ten years ago, and from a base in Napa he and his partners have gone on to make wine from vineyards across the state. The light golden color tells you that this is no over-oaked monster, and the nose and mouth agree: peaches and cream. It's medium-to-full bodied, with mild acidity - a gentle wine.

Description: Andretti Selections 2004 Chardonnay contains ripe, tropical fruit aromas that lead to flavors of guava and butterscotch. A lightly buttery chardonnay that pairs well with fruit, cheese, poultry and salads.

Amaroo 2003 Chardonnay South Eastern Australia

Amaroo

Amaroo 2003 Chardonnay South Eastern Australia

tasting Notes: Some say that Australia is too hot for growing good, balanced Chardonnays, but Amaroo is among the producers proving them wrong. By buying grapes from several locations around Southeastern Australia and fermenting them at cool temperatures Amaroo has been able to create a big, fruity wine that remains focused and flavorful. They have adapted traditional French techniques like oak aging and resting the wine on its lees (yeast) to suit the exuberant fruit flavors that the Australian climate gives their grapes.

Rich fruit aromas of ripe pears, mango and pineapple roll out of the glass, framed by touches of lemon and vanilla. The Amaroo is creamy, round, and full in the mouth; the finish is clean and smooth, a fading vanilla flavor rather than an acidic twang.
